Health at Every Size:

The Surprising Truth About Your Weight

"Any person contemplating going on a diet to lose weight should read this book first. Every health professional who counsels people about weight control should absolutely read this book, read it again, and make sure their clients read it"

Glenn Gaesser, PhD
In Retrospect
It’s been over a decade since the second edition of Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth about Weight, was published. I’m proud that the book has achieved what the publishing world calls Bible status, meaning that sales have been consistently high since release. I’m proud to hear ongoing stories from people who tell me the book saved their life, or invigorated their professional practice, inspiring a much more rewarding path. I’m honored to be part of so many people’s journeys and I am so grateful – and privileged – to be able to do this work. As proud as I am of the book, I’m also aware of some of its shortcomings, including some of the ways in which it transmits my unexamined privilege and does damage. To acknowledge the ways my view has changed, and to advance the field, I co-authored a second book, Body Respect: What Conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out, or Just Plain Fail to Understand about Weight, with Lucy Aphramor. I asked Lucy to co-author, not only because they share my perspective on these topics and had been a trusted colleague and friend, but particularly because of their expertise and experience in integrating social justice perspective into theory and practice, which was the largest inadequacy I had identified in my first book. I had been teaching these ideas in my classrooms, and Lucy and I had been training professionals and clients in instituting these ideas, both individually and as partners – with great success. We wanted to capture these concepts in writing and generate a text to support implementation. I hope that audiences can continue to find value in the storytelling, self-help advice, and scientific information that have captivated audiences reading Health at Every Size, and put this information into better context by also reading Body Respect.
